I can't speak to the specific flight, but I think you will find it to be more day/time specific (based on winds weather) rather than varying by a specific flight on a given day. You are right that you are playing the lottery, but I've found A seats (at least on my flights) to have better odds than F seats, though it's a mixed bag to be sure.
