Then that's very strange. I've always found amex very straightforward on this.

BA would normally accept a claim for essential items but at lower levels; they might also have given you a credit of some sort.

I don't really see how the IT problems mark your case out. I would call again or if you're comfortable, make you purchases and put your claim into Amex regardless.
