Regardless of who is "legally right," this is typical of how not to handle a customer relations dispute, alas.
The airline have created an antagonistic and confrontational attitude between themselves and their customers with all the fees, restrictions, etc. These people were trying to bring a special cake for some celebration. The employees of JetBlue should have used good customer service to make sure the cake was put in a good location. The airline industry as a whole treats passengers like cargo instead of like valuable customers.

I would bet Southwest would have handled this situation differently.
