Anything east of I-78 is most certainly very safe. West of I-78 there are some bad areas, but even there is mostly safe at night. The only part of JC I wouldn't walk at night is around Bergen-Lafayette, which is far from the Hyatt. The past ten years have changed the area. Properties "downtown" (east of 78) in JC are now reaching $1000/sqft at times.
