Also got my son an Ethiopian ticket from LAX (via DUB, ADD) to join us for only about $740 (economy). Cape Town is definitely a Bucket List item for me, and this was the motivation I needed (and I've always wanted to fly ET just for fun).

Great feedback! ET is a decent airline, the new planes are really nice. If your bookings allows for it ask for a free transit hotel (if your layover is 8+ hours) and go explore the city with the complimentary visa.
South African immigration may require a yellow fever shot (though it is not always enforced). Keep in mind that SA immigration is crazy about children under 18 so make sure you have all the documents they require (it's a long list). Enjoy!
