You're most probably correct, but as I said, they said 2 legs within Australia is not allowed. This came after I claimed confusion with they're first explanation, being that it was not the most direct. I would have thought the agents would know the rules very well by now.
I thought of using MH again, but I didn't want to risk losing the CX flight, which is no longer available.
I think that its possible that the system does not tell the agents the reason and they make inferrences
Looking at HBA-BKK on CX , 1st couple of fares that I looked at had routing rules of
HBA-VA/QF-MEL-CX-HKG-KA/CX-BKK
which would go with the routing not being allowed. Not 2 sectors in Australia per se
