I do remember around this era that SQ was making forays into North America with 747-212Bs, and the TPAC flights stopped in HNL, but thought SIN-TYO would have been non-stop. I'm going to guess the route was SIN-TPE-NRT-HNL-SFO. The long HNL diversion killed the route and SQ went NRT-SFO as soon as it could.

The airline was not Singapore. And the enroute stop was not in Japan. Please, keep up the good guesses! ^
