5 hours might seem like a lot of time but it is the minimum needed to venture into the city. I would allow 1 hour travel time between CDG and Paris and I would plan on being back at CDG no later than 90 minutes before scheduled departure.

Buying a day trip or day pass (called a Mobilis pass) for transportation might seem a good idea but the Mobilis is invalid for travel to or from either of the airports. If you take the RER B, the cost from CDG to any métro station is 10€ (assuming you connect within the network and do not exit before reaching your destination). You can purchase two tickets at once and use the second for your return trip.

When returning to the airport, be careful about which northbound RER B train you board. Some of the trains go to Mitry Claye and not CDG.
