A very simple reason
- no award availability directly to SYD as a single award when I had to book. I had to book it as 2 separate awards prior to devaluation (even CX was not available for 2 awards on the dates I needed for a cruise).
LAX-NRT in JL J and NRT-SYD in JL F (which is soon going away).
It was well worth it as it is now 110K miles in F (
IF you can get it - which you cannot) and was about the same amount of miles for the 2 awards then (I don't remember exactly how much it was, but a lot less than it is now) - and more importantly, I could book it then. Good luck today
