It definitely seems to matter.
I got more regular upgrades as a Gold. But I did get a fantastic suite upgrade at Hilton Mexico City Reforma last week. First real upgrade in about 10 stays as a matched Diamond. So if the idea of matching my Hyatt status was to encourage me to make Diamond on nights/stays, it's not working so far.
