You can get seat assignments by contacting NZ directly. A few points to bear in mind..

You can't get a seat assignment within 24 hours of the flight departure, as the flight is handed over to flight editing at that time.
Certain rows can only be assigned to Star Alliance Gold or Silver members.
NZ can only assign you seats if your ticket has the NZ flight number on it. If it has the codeshare flight number (ie, an AC flight number AKL-LAX) it can't be done.
A seat assignment is not a guarantee. Your seat could be changed for reasons including but not limited to, aircraft weight and balance, medical passengers, unaccompanied minors, security personnel. This being said, you do get the seat you've requested 99% of the time.
