On my most recent checkin the guy specifically noted my Plat status (from Daily Getaways purchase I think) and upgraded me to a suite. They were pretty empty, though.
The point purchases don't count toward elite status, but the award night stays using points -- purchased or otherwise earned -- do count toward elite status in the same way as regular paid stays using just cash/bank card for payment.
