I've only been there once, for a 2-night mileage run/mini vacation. I took the train to the peak, then walked down. Only the walk down ended up in disaster as I was overcome with food poisoning.

I'd also recommend taking a ferry across the harbor. I did this at night, and the lights are amazing.
