Travel to Cuba (for Americans)

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but unfortunately I haven't been able to locate another thread. I'm curious as to what are the best routes to take to visit Cuba for Americans. I have a limited understanding that our trip needs to meet the requirements of one of twelve categories labeled by the US Embassy - https://havana.usembassy.gov/travelling_cuba.html

I was actually supposed to visit in 2008 with some friends, but was not able to get out of work. They traveled through another country to reach Cuba (Mexico or Costa Rica).

Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance on how to meet the requirements or do folks suggest flying through other countries? Thanks!
