Actually I think internet check-in is useful even when you have luggage to be checked. At AMS I have never had to wait in line to check luggage at the self-service check-in desks and I like to check-in early on-line, especially when flying economy, so that I can always be sure to be my favorite exit row seat. You can check-in up to 30 hrs. ahead of time and I have always been able to get exactly the exit row seating I wanted that far in advance of departure. At CDG there is no specific luggage check-in desk for people who already have their boarding cards but, even if I wasn't a PE, you can use the business class check-in desk in such cases, which might be nice for someone without status.
