It's certainly not as good as it used to be, but there are still some worthwhile rewards that don't take too much effort (for example, BOGO buffets). One of the best for newbie players is exclusive room rates which take very few points and you can book for up to 3 nights (i.e. $75/night at Vdara or $59/night at Mirage). Some of the better rewards (i.e. free Cirque shows) are very hard to get. Note that there is a a limit of 3 MGM rewards per person, so if you are going with another person, it might be worthwhile to both sign up.
If you want to start playing, lots of sites offer links for free chips (I like"myvegaschipsandcoupons" on Facebook which posts links to free chips every day.
