Oh, agree, I was just going on the implication that the OP was struggling to find reasonable through fares. If you can get there on a 'proper' connection at a half-decent price, do it!

Vienna-Ljubljana is a 6h journey, but a pleasant one. There are certainly day trains that cover it. Graz is on the way, though, and an interesting stopoff.
