I think BKK-MEL/SYD or even SIN-MEL/SYD would have been a better idea — less competition on BKK - australia than DPS - australia (and no LCCs) and EK can make BKK-SYD and SIN-MEL work.
Even KUL might be an option considering that the only competition they'd have is MH and AirAsia X (and EK KUL-MEL).
