With respect to the airline checking, be sure to read the fine print carefully. I learned the hard way that grocery store debits DO NOT QUALIFY.
The other point I want to stress is that actually seeing the miles posted to your American account can take months. So, it is a useful account for extending the expiration date of your miles, but, in my opinion, not much else.
However, one unadvertised "perk" is "purchase rewards". There are usually just a handful of offers to activate. And all are capped. But the same airline checking card recently offered 10% cash back at Starbucks, 5% at Auto Zone, etc.
