ARCHIVE: AA 737 MAX 8 SSW / 7M8 aircraft in service Nov 2017 (discussion)

AA currently (May 2016) has 272 Boeing 737-823 aircraft in service, with a further 32 on order and pending delivery.

In its order of Boeing 737 aircraft, AA included 100 737 MAX 8 orders with options for 60 more. The first 737 MAX -8 flew 29 Jan 2016; deliveries are to begin sometime in 2017. (Orders of AA A320neo aircraft have been deferred; 25 will be delivered beginning 2019 and 75 during 2020 and afterward, according to Terry Maxon.) These will be equipped with the CFM International LEAP-1B engine.

The 737-8* is essentially a replacement to the 737-800 with similar passenger capacity; in AA service, probably 160 passengers in F, MCE and MC configuration (the A321S holds 181). Range is expected to be 3,515 nmi (6,510 km). (The wingleted 737-800 has range of 3,115 nmi or 5,765 km fully loaded.)

The fourth generation 737 MAX (first flight 2016) will include airframe and wingtip modifications (Advanced Technology "Scimitar" split winglets) for enhanced efficiency and will use the larger and more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B engines. This will presumably allow a 20% improvement in fuel burn over A320 aircraft, a 4% improvement over the A320neo (new engine option) and a 14% fuel burn reduction over the 737NG currently in use.

The 737 MAX is to have the Boeing Sky Interior with LED interior lighting based on the Boeing 787 interior, overhead bins and ViaSat Ka band WiFi. Individual seatback AVOD screens will not be offered; at seat power is likely, but currently unconfirmed officially.

*Boeing aircraft are changing nomenclature. Like the existing 747-8 and 787-8 and -9, the 737 MAX on order by AA will be the -8, not -800.

Thread started for discussion, to be filled in with details as they become available.
