Questions
- is there an international transit/transfer desk?
- Does anyone have a map/description which shows where there is some kind of information desk/booth
- when he gets off his first flight does he simply look for signs that say 'transit' ? Then he needs to find the gate number on his own?
A lot of people transit to Air NZ. You need to check his visa/passport status for transit in Australia.

Q1 My understanding is yes (but I have never used)
Q2 MEL airport is not large. He will be in T2

Q3 Follow the transit sign. If he gets into the duty free maze before immigration he has gone too far. Turn 180° and find the transit door. TV screens will show the Air NZ gate (may be 14/16 or 18/19 on the pier if flying on a A320)
