Got my wife the AA Plat just recently, so we called to close out the AA Gold card which she has had about 1 year. The rep immediately offered to waive the $50 AF but nothing else. We asked about bonus miles or anything like that and got nothing. Closed it out; just didn't see the point in keeping it with the Plat.
Interestingly, when we said we still wanted to close it after he offered to waive the AF, he did point out that Citi had recently added the 24 month language so we couldn't reopen and get bonus miles again anytime soon.
TL;DR:
Offered to waive AF on AA Gold. Closed anyway.
Great CSR. He not only offered to waive the fee, but also clued you in that you could keep the card open, and churn it again in a year.
I see that advice was lost on you, but at least he tried.
