Not sure when your stay will be, but if it's going to be in somewhere around Jun - Sep, it's going to be hot and humid so the "short" walk from the Novotel to the MTR would become very long and harsh.

Having said that, personally, I actually find the Novotel working out very well for me. If I want the HKG style cafes, I walk a couple of blocks south, if I want western style restaurants/bars, I take the foot bridge up to the north, and the foot bridge also links to the Wanchai ferry so it's very easy to get to TST. If I want to head further north, then I get out of the foot bridge system around halfway, and catch bus 104 (during non-peak hours) which goes through Mong Kok. Most places I usually go to on the HK island side can be accessed via the tram.
