Yep, I was able to recreate prices at ~1950 USD, but I couldn't place a stopover in PVG without upping the fare on either the outbound or the inbound, even though one free stopover each way is permitted under the fare rules.

So although the fare rules say a stopover is permitted, it would require you to pay the higher intermediate point fare, which is what you are probably seeing.
