It's not necessary to pay for your AA flight with your Citi/AA card in order to get the free checked bag. When you get the card, your AAdvantage account gets coded to show that you get athe first checked bag free (on "domestic" flights only). Just make sure that your AAdvantage number is in your reservation record.
