Are you certain that it involves a security exit/re-entry ? Many of the AC flights into EWR arrive in the United Express gates in terminal A and there is a shuttle bus that runs from there to UA gates in term C (drops you near gate C70 if I am not mistaken) which does not require a security exit. While it may not seem like an ideal way to switch terminals, I find it fairly efficient.
