I went to a UK national specialist (Dollond & Aitchison for those interested), had all the tests, spent GBP 150, and got spectacles that seemed to make little if any difference. I still couldn't read small type.

On a visit to the USA I saw by chance reading spectacles in Wal-Mart for USD 20 that were just right. I use them whenever reading now. Those expensive ones I don't touch. The appearence of the frames is little different.
