If you clear within T-24 but prior to the gate, you're clearing off the "hidden" EUA. The published standby list doesn't come into play until the flight goes to the gate.
Edited to add: To clarify, yes, you can clear within T-24 and prior to the gate, but it will be off the EUA, not the published list. This actually happens with some frequency.
