It didn't show that message before because none of the information being sent between the browser and the web server was being sent via https. Now a portion of the website uses https and a portion does not use https. The portion that does not use https is mixed in with a portion of the site that does use https and the iPad web browser is giving the message as a FYI more than anything.

Not all of us have tech or software engineering backgrounds. Many or most of us are just end users and such messages can be a bit confusing to some, worrisome to others.
