Lots of people ask about "best island" and such for their first visit. My advice is a little of the wall, however consider the ship. It gives as good an overview of the state as is practical in 6 days. No packing and unpacking. Actually very inexpensive for room and board.
Stay away from the canned bus tours (sorry Jacks). The car rental companies used to bring a rental to the dock (do not know if that is currently available). Plan your own driving tour of each island.
I would rather people visit the Big Island only, but that's me.
