Okay, I should have been more specific...
About one year ago, I recall having a ticket for a flight with a number like AA 5985. It was a flight from OGG to HNL, operated by Hawaiian. It also had a number like HA 185. I could look in my electronic timetable and view a whole bunch of "AA 59XX" flights that were really Hawaiian Airlines interisland flights.

Did AA break off ties with HA?</font>
Nope

Like I said, I think the codeshare is only valid in conjunction with an AA mainland flight. If you do a search on a LAX-LIH r/t on aa.com, you will see the HA flights as a codeshare. I do not think you can book a codeshared HA (or AQ) flight HNL-LIH.
I am assuming you would want to book the codeshare so you get the aa.com bonus for online booking. If you went to HA's website and booked you can just get the base AA miles (same as UA/AQ).
