I was driving an Ontario registered rental car when I crossed the Niagara River into New York. The officer on the US side asked where I was born and I told him Sacramento, CA. He then made a remark about the Ontario license plates and asked if I had documentation to prove US citizenship. Fortunately I had my passport with me so there were no further issues.
