There is currently a discussion on the DL board regarding red-eyes and I was curious what the overall consensus of FT'ers are.

I for one try to avoid red-eyes like the plague, and only will take them when traveling to Europe.

What is your preference?

I avoid them with much more effort than avoiding the plague - the plague, after all, can now be treated with a quick dose of antibiotics. Recovering from a red-eye takes days for me ...

I just took the red-eye to LGW in Jan and I won't even do that again - daytime only for me thank you. I just can't sleep on planes.. or not well enough to know I've had any sleep. Since travel wears me out anyway, I'm thinking if I get there at 8pm but it feels like 3pm to me, big deal - I get to go to bed early! Much better in my mind than getting there at 8am and feeling like it's 3am!

(and if I weren't afraid of being labeled a self-appointed moderator, I'd point out this probably isn't the forum for this thread)

I swear by redeyes. Maybe that is the airline analyst within me who smiles at the good fleet utilization, but I would much rather sleep on a plane after a day's work and arrive at destination to do another day's work without having to worry about hotels and other stuff.

I'm lucky that I can sleep like a baby aboard planes, so I wake up refreshed and ready to rumble as soon as we land.

Ditto (except for the airline analyst part!).

my choice, mostly, is the red-eye, anywhere I fly.

* I will have a good dinner meal with friends (or business partners) before leaving
* I will (and luckily I can) fall asleep right after take-off and often until breakfast is served (upgraded to first on two-class flights, to business on three-class flights)
* I will 'invest' the money spared for one hotel night in a nicer/more luxury accomodation at my destination (and try to arrange for early check-in; or if the room is not ready yet, I mostly succeed access to the fitness-/health-/swimming-pool area and relax (and may have a few hours of additional sleep) there. Often also, if breakfast is included in my hotel rate, I may get two breakfasts for one overnight-stay).
* I will be less-likely off-line if (business-decisions, stock-market devellopments, etc) need instant action.

I'm another 'flight sleeper' who likes to take redeye flights so that I can get in another full day of work or play. And on those flights I usually sleep sitting up, which I find more comfortable than the semi-reclined position of all but the fully-flat first class seats you get on long-haul aircraft.

I have a friend who still can't believe the time we were on the same American Airlines 11:00pm redeye from LAX to JFK several years ago; we were in opposite-the-same-aisle coach seats on a full DC-10. While she was awake all night, I was asleep before the plane left the gate and slept until I was awakened by the wheels touching down in New York.

I'll take them anytime... peace and quiet are the best way for me to get through a long flight...

I HATE redeyes, but I will take them if it means an extra day someplace I'm having fun at, or if it saves a significant amount of money (~$100) out of my pocket. I will also take them if I'm arriving home on a weekend day and don't have to go straight to work.
