What's the best bang-for-the-buck way to hit the mark for PLAT? Fly a couple of SAN to LAX r/t flights? I have an overseas trip coming up in December and I would like to be PLAT when I request an upgrade.

Just go to www.google.com/flights and pick the date(s) you want to fly from your home airport to a potential destination. Also select AA as carrier. Once you have that priced and options shown, you can also "Explore destinations" on the top right hand side. Click on that and it shows alternative destinations with the prices for your date(s).
