I recently purchased the Sony RX1 at half price (a demo model).
Quite simply the quality is breathtaking.
I would rather carry this unit as a travel camera than my previous unit, a Samsung NX500 with medium focal length zoom (a very good camera), which has gone into the eager hands of Ms Platy.
It's a personal choice - I love being able to capture a quality shot and gladly forego the versatility of a zoom or interchangeable lens system to get that quality level in a highly portable unit.
Respected that for others a pocket sized Sony RX100 IV (or similar) would be an admirable alternative. There's no way I'm going to travel with multiple lenses, etc...
I don't find the fixed focal lens to be a problem - I accept that I can specialise in certain shots (scenery, portraits, street, etc) and I have no personal interest in an ultra fast focus system and long distance lens for racing cars, far off wildlife, etc...stalking the shot rather than lazily relying on a zoom is fine! Others may have different goals.
The camera instills a sense of magic, a burning desire to grab the unit and go out and take shots, an enthusiasm for photography I haven't felt for years...I wish I could rerun my recent month in Europe just to have that camera on board...
