I agree that it varies from property (or chain) to property (or chain), though as a general rule, standard is the lowest, superior better and deluxe better than that (but there certainly are exceptions). I also agree that it's wisest to query the travel agent or reservationist (or the website). Last fall, my travel agent booked me into "senior" room at a well-known resort in South America. I expected a better-than-average room. I got a small, crummy, old, unrenovated room under the eaves.
