If their original method of payment was debit, the cashier will ask them if they want their refund in cash or back to their debit card. Could you buy something at Target that gets you as close to $500 as possible after tax (or over $500 and pay the difference in cash), pay with a VGC as debit and not credit, and then return the item?

Not sure if there's a maximum cash refund they'll give, and you could probably only pull it off a few times. But it's a possible way to liquidate a VGC.
