Stay at the New World Courtyard Marriott. It is part of a large shopping center and office complex. The hotel elevators have direct access to the different shopping levels, including an arcade for the kiddies, and a food court. Across the street is a supermarket. The subway station is about 100 yards down the road. I believe Tien an men square is only 2-3 stations away.
You could feel comfortable splitting up with your spouse for a while, if one of you wanted to rest while the other shopped, etc. , since you'd all still be in the same building. I stayed there for a week and highly recommend it.
