Does Oneworld charge for award bookings differently than Star Alliance?

In the past, I booked several *A award bookings and was charged mileage based on flying from my origin to my destination, regardless of where I connected in between. For example, when I flew North America to Australia via Asia, I was charged as if I flew directly from North America to Australia.

In a recent Oneworld booking, (similar route), I was charged piecemeal, i.e. North America to Asia PLUS Asia to Australia. This resulted in a much larger mileage charge.

Is this actually the way it is?
