Well, for what it's worth, I once got a call from Discover Corporate and was asked about a number of gift card purchases (VGCs at a few of Kroger subsidiaries, and it was typically mixed with regular purchases). So I think Discover is certainly aware of these purchases. I suspect that other issuers also get this kind of information, because buying gift cards with stolen credit cards is a kind of a thing. I think they just don't care as long as it's you doing the purchase...unless they suspect you don't intend or have means to pay them back.
