Much ado about nothing for most people (except those that prefer not to be tracked) - no one seems to mind about document requirements to go into Canada....
That expressed "opinion" about "retaliation" seemed to be a stretch and then some.

Plenty of people mind the document requirements to go into Canada. The USG is still complaining that Canada is allowing foreign visitors -- US persons included -- to legally enter Canada without a passport and/or NEXUS card. Re-entering back into the U.S. from Canada isn't generally a show-stopper for returning US citizens at US POEs without a passport and/or NEXUS card -- even as it most often (but not always) slows down things a bit. And not everyone is happy with the U.S. WHTI that forced the airlines serving the U.S. to generally require passports and/or NEXUS cards for passengers to fly between the U.S. and Canada (in either direction) too.
