I don't travel nearly that much, but for a couple years had a job where I was off site, punctuated by about 30 nights/year on the opposite coast (usually about a week at a time, working primarily over weekends and then coming back to the daily commute, too). It helps a lot of you can look up old friends from school or whatever who are now scattered around and catch them for dinner or a hike when you're in their area. Probably harder to do internationally, but not impossible.
