First, check to make certain that the policy covers carry-on. If it doesn't, your claim will be denied,
Second, read the policy for claims calculation. Most policies pay fair market value. That is, the $599 + extras - depreciation. Put simply, how much would you pay if you were offered that camera in that used condition if you were purchasing it on the open market? Likely far short of what you paid.
Third, make sure that you have the documentation required. If carry-on is covered, it may well require a copy of or at least the police report incident #.
