The t&c for Star Alliance Upgrades ( https://www.united.com/web/en-US/con...rade/saua.aspx ) say that codeshares are no good. "Star Alliance Upgrade Awards are valid on participating carriers only, and only on flights marketed and operated by the same airline."

But if you want to give it a shot, let us know what happens. Here's a report from last year of someone who booked a UA-marketed, LH-operated flight and tried to operate it via *A upgrade: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/lufth...-alliance.html . They hit a problem where UA was willing to try the upgrade, but they had to reissue the ticket on LH stock, and they were unable to do that because of foreign-carrier rules that affected their specific fare (maaybe a YCA fare).

This is possibly the wrong thread for YCA fares — you may want to start a brand-new thread or http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...-upgrades.html .
