Interesting maneuver at IAD this morning

I've noticed during my morning commute that Emirates has a daily (or perhaps a few days a week, I don't see it every morning) flight landing at IAD around 08:30. (I love their livery, so always admire the planes when I see them.) This morning I saw an unusual maneuver:

A small UA plane came in to land and very shortly after it (perhaps too close, I don't know) I saw a larger Emirates plane on the same southbound approach but veer sharply and suddenly to the left. I thought maybe he was too close to the UA, so was asked to go around. But he continued his turn until he was flying back toward the north east. Do you guys think they re-routed him at the last minute to BWI or something? It was very odd. He didn't look like he was in trouble, but it was a very sharp veer off the approach and not the usual go-around pattern that flights do when in a holding pattern around IAD.
