Granted I'd rather return to Toronto in a business CX seat but having experienced business Eva Air TPE-YYZ I was thoroughly impressed. Heck, I would even work my way home trying out ANA or Asiana if the surcharge isn't too high.

Is this type of conversion a good thing any more?

American/US Air chart:

I think it's only for people with EXTRA Aeroplan miles to convert. I do it to diversify, just as I collect BA Avios and Alaska miles, just in case *A options don't work out.
e.g. I redeemed Avios for CX YYZ-HKG 2Y, Alaska Miles (50K one-way) for YYZ-HKG 1J for upcoming summer because *A options aren't good (ie. no EVA TPAC space at all)

Otherwise, you have to do your own calculation on whether Aeroplan vs. AA is worth the transfer
