Yes, you should book the outward leg as soon as it becomes availabile using the 2-4-1 and then phone in to add the return when it becomes available. AFAIK there is no charge for this.
That sounds like what I did to be honest!
It appears there wasn't a charge but my memory had gotten foggy!
