They can do whatever they want, but depending on the laws they might get fined (i'm no lawyer so i have no idea what they're obligated to do). All this press coverage is definitely working in our favour since if they cancel it we'll see a string of "i missed my <insert relative's name> <insert special occasion> because united cancelled my ticket!!" which is bad PR for them. Contrast that to people posting all over the place about how awesome united is for honoring the price. I wouldn't want to be at united's marketing/pr department right now haha.
