I carry a color photocopy of my passport. In the few times I've been challenged for ID in Europe, that was enough.
This have worked out for me. Though when I bought an iPhone from a supermarket in Colombia, I had to provide the copy of the passport and another id to go along with my C&S CSP. Good thing I had my DL with me.
