Either the event planner has negotiated for the points to be awarded to the sponsor or, more likely, a better discount. It's pretty common business practice and your choice really is to book outside the negotiated rate and earn points or take advantage of the cheaper rate.

If this is a business trip, I'd find it hard to justify paying more to earn points for personal use.
